Foods Rich in Omega-3
There are three types of omega-3 fatty acids that can be found in foods: EPA, DHA, and ALA. EPA, or eicosapentaenoic acid, and DHA, docosahexaenoic acid, are found in cold-water fish such as:
Wild-caught salmon
Mackerel
Halibut
Sardines
Tuna
Herring
Good sources of ALA, or alpha-linoleic acid, are:
Flaxseed
Flaxseed oil
Canola (rapeseed) oil
Pumpkin seeds
Walnuts
Walnut oil
If eating foods with ample omega-3 content is difficult, there are several fish oil supplements on the market. They can be found in liquid or capsule form.
The liquid form is best for maximum absorption, but the capsules will provide adequate EFAs. When shopping for a capsule supplement, look for the highest amount of EPA and DHA available per capsule to ensure you are getting the same benefits as consuming the essential fatty acids in food.
