Family Fitness

Make sure that your emphasis on fitness isn't a one-sided affair. Thinness is not a measure of physical fitness, and all of your children should be encouraged to lead an active lifestyle, not just the child with the weight problem. The same goes for all the adults in the household. Planning fun family activities that get everyone moving, such as hikes, trips to the park or beach, and family walks and bike rides, is the best way to demonstrate your commitment to your family's health.

For kids who prefer to spend most of their fitness time in either team sports or group instruction with their peers, your support is still important. Don't just drop off and pick up. Stay for practice, games, and competitions, and consider volunteering to help out wherever needed. Let your child see you taking an interest in your own fitness as well. Whether it be regular visits to the gym or neighborhood walks and bike rides, she needs you to set an example she can be inspired by and follow.
