Building an Informed Consumer
Getting your family on the right track nutritionally requires an education in nutrition basics, the difference between marketing messages and nutrition facts, daily dietary requirements, and how to decipher food labels.
Virtually everyone can benefit from a visit to a registered dietitian, or RD. An RD can look at your current meal and eating patterns and suggest changes for improvement. Taking a food log into the RD's office is often helpful. It's a good idea to make an appointment for the entire family to attend to keep your child from feeling singled out and so that he feels supported in the group effort to improve family nutrition.
Your child's pediatrician should be able to provide a referral to a registered dietitian who has experience working with children and families. The American Dietetic Association can also help you find an RD in your area. See Appendix B for contact information.
