Creating a Supportive Environment
The “Do as I say, not as I do” philosophy is the quickest way to sabotage your child's fitness goals. You need to be a role model in this effort. Think back to the last time you tried to give up a difficult habit or make a major change in your life without adequate support. Perhaps it was giving up cigarettes while your significant other continued to smoke a pack a day, or trying to stick to a strict budget while your best friend dragged you along on her weekly shopping spree. You may or may not have managed to achieve your objective. Either way, it was probably painfully clear that achieving a goal is much harder when those around you are working against you instead of with you.
With that in mind, your whole family — siblings included — should make an effort to make the lifestyle changes that will help your child achieve a healthier weight. Keep cupboards stocked with healthy snacks. Plan active weekend outings, and keep emotionally connected as well. While a trip to the park or a bike ride is a great way to spend active time with your child, quiet times with family spent talking, playing board games, or reading together are just as important to ensuring an emotional connectedness that will help your child feel loved and supported in her efforts. Chapter 4 discusses strategies for putting a stronger family focus on your physical activities and spare time.
