Homemade Applesauce

Make a stockpot full of this delicious sauce during the fall, and freeze in 1–cup containers. It will stay good for up to 6 months in your freezer.

INGREDIENTS | YIELDS 2½ cups

  • 3 sweet apples
  • ⅛ teaspoon cinnamon
  • Enough water to cover apples
  1. Peel apples and cut into chunks.

  2. In a large saucepan, combine apple chunks and cinnamon. Cover apples with water. Cook until apples are very tender and start to break apart.

  3. Mash with a potato masher or the back of a spoon. Transfer to blender or food processor if a finer consistency is needed.

Applesauce for Baking

Many of the recipes for baked goods in this book use applesauce mixed with baking powder. Homemade applesauce is perfect for this. Mash the applesauce to a smooth consistency and then follow the baking recipe directions.
