Influencing Feedback

You can influence what kind of feedback you will receive, but you should always use indirect methods. For example, the best way for a seller to influence a buyer's feedback is to strive to be honest and prompt in all transactions. Answer questions quickly and completely. Ship goods in clean, well-cushioned packaging, and never try to score a few extra bucks by overcharging for postage or delivery.

Meanwhile, the easiest way for a buyer to influence seller feedback is to make contact with the seller soon after the auction ends and pay immediately using one of the seller's preferred payment methods. Also, if the seller says he only uses the U.S. Postal Service for his deliveries, don't insist on DHL or FedEx. The Postal Service may be the seller's only convenient means for shipping. The same applies to payment methods. It may be difficult or inconvenient for the seller to cash a money order, and he may have to pay a fee when he does.

To get the best feedback as a buyer, pay close attention to the seller's preferences and try to stick to them. If you need to use another payment or shipping method, contact the seller before bidding, briefly explain your situation, and ask if he can accept your best payment or shipping method. Often a seller will say yes, and you will get good feedback for your courtesy and consideration.

What is feedback manipulation?

When a seller or buyer tries to directly influence the feedback rating she will receive, that is called “feedback manipulation.” Online auction sites generally forbid the practice, but it still happens.

To get the best feedback as a seller, treat the buyer as you would want others to treat you. Only sell merchandise that you have checked thoroughly. Don't skimp on the box and packing materials, even if it costs you a little more than you listed in the shipping charges. Get the goods out the door and into the shipping channels as soon as possible, and let the buyers know their packages are on the way.
