With an Attitude

Every day, you set the tone in the classroom by your attitude. You are on stage from the moment your students arrive until the bell rings and it's time for them to leave. If you have a negative attitude, your students will also adopt this mindset, and your class that day will probably not be very productive. On the other hand, if you have a positive attitude toward your students, your subject, your profession, and yourself, you will find that this optimism pervades the class. You will probably have a productive day.

Attitude Has Positive Effects

The effects of a positive attitude have been widely studied. They include the following:

  • Improved job satisfaction

  • Better self-esteem

  • Improved personal interactions

  • Better health

  • Greater achievement levels

  • Improved overall happiness

  • People with positive attitudes are often healthier and happier in their jobs and personal lives. They typically can achieve more in any given day. People want to be around other positive individuals.

Everyone has probably experienced what it's like to be around a negative person. Just think how your students are going to feel after spending time with you if you are pessimistic about them or your curriculum.

The Core Aspect of Successful Teaching

While your attitude is just one part of the formula, it holds the core position. When you have a positive attitude, consistency, fairness, and flexibility are much easier to master. You will find that students will become more positive in their attitude toward you. A quick way to appear positive even if you do not feel it is to smile. You will find that if you smile, your attitude will follow, and you will be a happier person. Children need to feel loved and accepted. Your smile, kind words, and accepting attitude will go a long way toward helping your students feel that they can achieve.
