Multiple Preps

Teaching more than one subject in a term is known as having multiple preps. For example, you might be assigned to teach regular biology and advanced/honors biology. This requires two different lesson plans. The worst situation, however, is to have four or more preps. If you have that many classes to create curriculum for, you can quickly become overwhelmed.

Organization Is Key

Again, it is very important to stay organized. One good idea is to use colored folders for each class. That way, you can tell without looking at the title of a file which class it is associated with. As soon as a piece of paper crosses your desk, categorize it and stick it in the correct folder.

Ask for Help

It should not embarrass you to ask for help. In fact, when all is said and done, those who do not ask but act anyway are the ones who appear to be foolish. Asking for help can be as simple as discussing your problems with other teachers over lunch. Self-reliance is a great thing. However, those who truly make it do so by “standing on the shoulders of giants.” If you happen to have multiple preps and float, realize that the ability to adapt is within you.

Do Not Reinvent the Wheel

A year in which you are given multiple preps is not the year to try all kinds of new things. Do not create complicated lesson plans for yourself. Keep things simple so that you can actually have a life outside of school. Realize that you will probably not be the most creative teacher you can be because of your situation. However, you are learning important skills to help you in all classes and the future.
