Expect the Unexpected

Your first order of business as a teacher is to expect the unexpected. Realize that things will probably not go as you planned. The situation described in the opening of this chapter may not be typical, but it can and does occur. If it seems really scary to you, realize that you can still follow the principles of being an effective teacher and end up having a good year.

Your reaction and success depend on your attitude and the way you face each new situation. Actively look for ways to improve your situation at every turn. Do not just assume there is nothing you can do. Instead, work with what you do have to create a good experience for yourself and your students. If you do not believe that you can work under the conditions set before you, then you will be right. Similarly, if you believe that you can make it through the year, you will be right too.
