Effective lessons need to be accompanied by authentic assessments — evaluations or tests that directly examine what students have learned. When students have successfully completed an authentic assessment, the teacher can feel confident that they have learned the major topics and ideas presented in the lessons. It takes a lot of work to create effective, authentic assessments and to grade them in a fair and consistent fashion.
