Learning by Observation
You will undoubtedly hear some wild tales and sometimes even horror stories about some of the physicians. They can range from abusive outbursts to demands for assistance, or even comments with sexual overtones. Some prefer a dressing to be done a certain way, some don't want faxes sent to their offices, and some want a head-to-toe assessment with every phone call you make to them. Some expect all their ordered labs to be done STAT (from statim, a Latin term meaning “immediately”) and reported to them within the hour.
Doctors' quirks and demands are part of the unwritten rules of the game, and in many cases, learning these as quickly as possible will behoove you. You need to remain open-minded and form your own opinions. You also need to heed the unwritten rule of being discreet when discussing individuals.
To some, Dr. Heart may seem to be an angry old woman who hates nurses and makes unreasonable demands. Even the nurses who hang out at the nurses' station instead of spending more time with their patients suddenly rush to give their patients care when she comes in. Perhaps she reminds you of your favorite great aunt who is a little crotchety and demanding. You recognize the same odd sense of humor and understand that this woman sets the bar high. She demands excellence and wants her patients' needs met without asking. She's quick and to the point, wastes no time, and expects that nurses be prepared and anticipate her needs. Your coworkers will marvel that you get along with this woman!
Others may think that Dr. Jones is a terrific doctor because he's charming and so good-looking. He's always warm and friendly and woos the little old ladies. His bedside manner is great, but you've seen better doctors. He is too concerned with making everyone like him to set limits and to expect his patients to do a little more for themselves. The nurses all seem to dote on his every request, but you see through his façade.
Listen to your coworkers and heed their advice, but learn to keep your opinions to yourself and always be professional. Show respect for others, and they will respect you.
