Nurses and other health care professionals have long been morally and ethically responsible to protect their patient's right to privacy and to maintain confidentiality. The recent implementation of HIPAA legislation has brought the issues of privacy and confidentiality to the attention of the entire nation, from individuals' access to health care and physician visits to purchasing prescriptions and hospital stays. Nurses have a primary role in helping patients to understand all their rights.
