Supportive Care
Several natural remedies combined with the right nutrition can help the kidneys and fortify other organs. Commercial kidney diets maintain low protein, fat, and sodium, but they might also contain harmful chemical additives, preservatives, and byproducts, which put a strain on the already overburdened renal system. Consult your veterinarian to find the best treatment for your dog.
Herbal Therapy
Several herbs are known to help detoxify the kidneys. Use astragalus, burdock, dandelion leaf, echinacea, garlic, ginkgo, gotu kola, hawthorn, and marshmallow. Chinese herbs, especially one called rehmannia, is highly reputed and can reverse azotemia in some cases, especially when used early in the course of disease. Acupuncture is used to enhance the effectiveness of the herbs to increase the renal blood flow. This combination is highly recommended.
Homeopathic Help
Homeopathic remedies are helpful for urinary tract problems. Aconite is useful if a dog is straining to urinate, especially if the weather is particularly cold or damp. Arsenicum helps incontinence, a minimal urine flow, straining, or blood in the urine. Belladonna can be administered if there's sudden onset of straining or incontinence.
Berberis will help alleviate painful urination or tenderness and is useful for frequent urination or mucus in the urine. If there is blood in the urine, give cantharis, which will also help alleviate straining or discomfort during urination. Equisetum is particularly beneficial for puppies and senior females and if there's incontinence, a slight urine flow, or pain or discomfort after urinating.
