Time for Etudes

Next, you will start a unique part of this book: the etudes. Etude comes from the French term meaning “to study.” The etude is a widely used moniker for pieces that you might learn as a student of an instrument. For example, Chopin's piano etudes are famous not only for their teaching ability, but for their musical content as well. In this book, the etudes will give you a space not only to practice what you have learned so far, but more importantly, to put it to musical use by composing some music with what you have learned. You will encounter two other etude chapters where you will be able to turn this information from “theory” into music — and isn't that the whole point of this? Indeed it is.
