Dealing with Accidentals

Here is a short but important question: How do you harmonize a note that is not diatonic to a scale? Say you're in the key of C major and you have a melody note of F#. That note isn't in any of the diatonic chords, so what do you do? Read Chapter 12 and learn about advanced chord progressions, specifically how to deal with chromatic harmony (harmonizing notes outside the scale).
