Bowel Problems
Constipation is common in MS and can occur as a result of a loss of sensation that signals you when it's time to use the bathroom. Similarly, the loss of sensation may result in an overactive bowel, and sometimes (though rare) a lack of bowel control. Problems with the bowel can occur with bladder dysfunction or by themselves.
It's important to find the root cause of any bowel problems. Sometimes, making a simple lifestyle change — drinking more water, increasing fiber intake, or taking a stool softener — can help ease some of the problems such as constipation and hard stools. A well-balanced diet and a regular exercise regimen are also treatment strategies. Be sure to talk to your doctor about any bowel problems you are experiencing. If he rules out other causes, there are some medications available to help with the symptoms caused by MS.
