Speech Hints and Tips
Hosts or hostesses of pre-wedding parties are often called upon to offer up some kind words regarding the engagement. The bride's dad may jump at this idea, or you may be the one who has a thing or two to say. But what should you say?
If you don't speak in public on a regular basis, and if the thought of holding the attention of a roomful of people makes you nervous, you might give up on the idea of offering a toast before you've given it enough thought. This is your daughter's engagement, after all, and guests will be looking to you, especially if you're the hostess, to lend your official seal of approval to the union.
If you do decide to voice your endorsement, plan what you want to say. It's incredibly painful for guests to watch a speaker who's trying — and failing — to hold the floor. Give yourself plenty of time to jot down your ideas and to express them appropriately. Practice at least once or twice — and yes, do it in front of the mirror. You want to get a feel for your facial expressions, as well. If you keep it short and simple, you're sure to make the best impression.
