Comfort Measures

Some migraineurs experience increased sensitivity to touch, so a set of high-thread-count sheets, soft blankets, and comfortable loungewear or pajamas can make a world of difference. You may find that elevating your head helps to alleviate lingering head pain, so have extra pillows on hand to adjust as needed. Nonpharmaceutical pain relief in the form of cool compresses, massage, and relaxation techniques is also an important part of recovery for many migraineurs. They also have the added benefits of minimal cost and no side effects. There is limited research on the effectiveness of massage in migraine treatment and recovery. Studies surveying migraine patients show that applying manual pressure to the pain points on the head is a frequently used method of alleviating head pain. Chapter 7 has more information on the use of compresses and relaxation techniques for migraine treatment, and Chapter 9 explores the use of other bodywork techniques.
