For thousands of years, empires fought to take over large pieces of the planet. The Middle East has been ruled by indigenous empires from the inside out and by distant foreign regimes from the outside in. Nevertheless, the Middle East has been shaped by centuries of dictators, rebel revolts, and empires reclaiming control.
