Choosing an Exercise Program

You have plenty of options for pulling together a sensible, effective exercise program that will give you the aerobic, strengthening, and flexibility training you need. The program you decide on should be fun for you; otherwise, you'll quickly lose interest. The following are some issues to consider:

  • Are you better suited to working out alone or are you motivated by working in a group?

  • How much assistance will you need to begin your program? You may prefer to begin with the on-site advice of a fitness instructor in a gym, and then do more of your work on your own.

  • Can you incorporate both indoor and outdoor exercises into your routine? Designing an exercise plan that involves as much variety as possible is one way to make sure you'll remain interested and engaged in it.

  • How much money are you willing to spend on gym fees and equipment? If you sign up for an expensive exercise program, the cost could become a reason to drop it after a short time.

  • Will the program you've chosen be convenient — or even doable — given your schedule? If you choose a gym or workout center that's across town from your home and job, you'll be tempted to skip it more often. If you have to drag out heavy equipment or chase the rest of your family away from the television in order to work out, it may not take long before you decide it isn't worth the effort.

  • Does your program incorporate exercises that will help you build strength, aerobic endurance, and flexibility? Don't create a program that's going to box you in to any one type of exercise or a single routine. By varying the type, intensity, and length of exercises within your program, you'll continue to challenge your body as its capabilities improve over time.
