The Benefits of Water
When looking at something as ordinary as water we often forget to look at the extraordinary features of this life-giving fluid. Our bodies are made up of approximately 55 to 75 percent water. Water is necessary for almost every bodily function. Some of these functions include regulating body temperature, carrying nutrients and oxygen to cells, cushioning joints, protecting tissues, and taking away unwanted toxins.
The Mediterranean Food Guide Pyramid recommends six glasses of water per day. This has been criticized for being on the low side. Our own food guide pyramid recommends at least eight to twelve glasses per day. The amount of water each individual needs depends on his or her body composition, body mass, and physical activity level. Those who are exercising strenuously, exposed to extreme climates, and/or are pregnant or breastfeeding require the upper end of the recommended amount.
Tips for increasing water intake include drinking a glass before every meal, toting along a water bottle during the day, always having a full glass of water on the desk or table, keeping a cold pitcher of water in the refrigerator, adding a twist of lemon or lime for a bit of flavor, and buying water instead of soft drinks when at a convenience store.
Don't wait until you're thirsty to have that glass of water; by the time you feel thirsty, chances are you're already dehydrated. Also keep in mind water has no calories or caffeine, and can add to a feeling of fullness. So don't waste another minute: go grab a glass of water and drink up! Also keep in mind that water can be consumed in its own natural still state, or in a carbonated state such as sparkling water and seltzer.
