Stay Ahead of the Technology Curve

Some managers believe they are up on technology, yet it is their administrative assistants who do all the work. If you don't really understand the technologies that are part of your daily work life, read professional journals and enroll in classes to bring yourself up to speed. It's an investment that could save your career.

Should you find yourself looking for other opportunities, your technical knowledge may well be what puts you across the line in the sand that separates applicants from contenders. Most job interviews include questions about technology specific to the job as well as in general. You will need to be able to speak intelligently, and with real-world knowledge, about technology that is relevant to your field and job interests.

When the people who report to you improve their skills and expand their knowledge, it's almost impossible for yours to remain stagnant. When your employees grow, you grow. When people are growing, their loyalty — to their managers and to the company — also increases. They perform better. And you have more time to focus on strategic issues, including your own career objectives. In a sense, it's an upward domino effect.
