Laws, regulations, and policies affecting the workplace typically cover issues of safety, health and welfare, and fairness. Employment laws are numerous and complex, existing at the federal, state, and industry levels. Some apply to organizations that employ more than a certain number of employees, while others affect everyone who works. Federal and state regulations that derive from them — along with the workplace policies and practices that result — change as legislatures pass new laws and agencies develop new rules. It is your responsibility as a manager to be familiar with the laws and regulations that apply in your state and industry.
