Technical Titles
Technical magazines are similar to academic titles in that they are read by experts in a chosen field. However, the content of technical titles is more about practical applications than it is about academic theories. Where an engineer may look to a scholarly journal for statistical information about how bridge building affects waterfront populations, that same engineer would look to a technical title for information about how to build the actual bridge using the newest construction methods.
Again, you're looking at a highly knowledgeable readership, and as such you will need to be an expert yourself in order to land writing assignments from technical magazines. As with the other segments of the magazine marketplace discussed so far, a look at a handful of the titles in the segment will quickly help to make this point clear:
Often, people who write for technical magazines are professionals within their fields. A top-name architect, for instance, may agree to write an article for an architectural technical title that explores the pros and cons of designing with a new form of building material in mind.
This again means that you as a writer must also be an expert on the subject matter if you hope to land an assignment from this type of magazine. If you have expertise in a complex industry and can offer information in a user-friendly format, then you have an excellent chance of breaking into these types of titles.
