Getting Help

Finding a good attorney — no matter what your situation — is never an easy task. In the case of copyright infringement, you will have the added requirement of finding a good attorney who has a degree of specialty in copyright and trademark law. Sometimes, these kinds of lawyers refer to themselves as “first amendment attorneys.” Other times, you will see the word “copyright” or “trademark” listed among their specialties.

Some professional writers' associations keep copyright-knowledgeable attorneys on a retainer, to help members with legal problems that can be resolved fairly quickly. Your membership in a writers' group may therefore be your easiest path toward finding a reputable attorney to battle a copyright infringement.

Depending on how big the city is where you live, you may be able to find a copyright and-trademark attorney in your local telephone directory. If you find nothing in the phone book, you can check with your local bar association for recommendations. Go to the American Bar Association's Web site, www.abanet.org, click on the “public resources” link on the home page's left-hand side, and then click on “lawyer referral services” under the heading “Get Legal Help.” A map of the United States will open, allowing you to click on the state where you live and search for reputable referrals with the proper expertise.
