⅓ cup apple cider vinegar
½ cup water
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
2 tablespoons brown sugar
½ teaspoon pepper
¼ cup lemon juice
1 onion, minced
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
⅓ cup ketchup
In a medium saucepan, combine all ingredients except ketchup. Bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce heat to low and simmer for 20 minutes.
Remove pan from heat and stir in ketchup. Use immediately, or cover and chill in refrigerator for up to 3 days.
Using BBQ Sauce
Since barbecue sauce is so high in sugar (from the sugar, onions, and ketchup) it can burn quite easily. When cooking with barbecue sauce on a grill or under the broiler, add it during the last 20 to 30 minutes of cooking, just long enough to heat the sauce through and form a glaze. If it cooks at high heat any longer, it will burn.
