Gods Associated with Love
Gods are the male aspect of the higher love, often referred to as the source, co-creator, god, and spirit. For centuries, society has looked toward the gods to bring about change within family life, from creation to protection. The god is the goddess's counterpart, differing only in his masculine aspects. The following are some gods who are worshipped or called upon to help bring about love.
Eros
Eros, the Greek god of love, is more commonly known by his Roman name, Cupid. As the son of Aphrodite, he helped his mother in the quest for love. It was Eros's job to shoot the unsuspecting victim with an arrow, which was tipped with a special love potion created by Aphrodite. The potion would make the victim fall immediately in love with the next person they encountered, giving birth to the timeless phenomenon of love at first sight.
Fact
In Roman mythology, Eros is known as both Cupid and Amor. In classical art, Eros is always shown carrying his trademark bow and arrow and is depicted as a young man or child with wings.
Eros most often aimed his arrows at others, but he once fell victim to them himself. As usual, Aphrodite was behind the mischief and used Eros to execute the plan. Psyche was the daughter of a mortal king whose exceptional beauty ignited Aphrodite's jealousy. Aphrodite concocted a plan to make Psyche fall in love with the most hideous man alive, but Eros accidentally pricked himself with his own arrow and fell in love with Psyche instead.
Eros wooed her by night, and the two fell in love. Eros's one stipulation was that Psyche never light a lantern because he did not want his identity revealed. For a while, Eros's passionate love was enough, but Psyche was compelled to snatch a glimpse of her lover after her jealous sisters told her she was sleeping with a monster who would devour her. That night, Psyche waited for Eros to fall asleep and lit a lantern. She recognized Eros immediately, but a drop of hot wax fell on her lover and he awoke. Angry at the betrayal of his trust, Eros left Psyche.
Psyche was devastated. She set out on a quest to find her lost love, but all she found was misery. She appealed to Aphrodite for help, but the vengeful goddess unleashed her fury on the girl who had broken her son's heart. Aphrodite designed a series of impossible tasks for Psyche, and Psyche completed them all. When Eros got wind of Psyche's suffering, he went to Zeus, who allowed Psyche into the realm of the immortals. Psyche and Eros were reunited and lived happily ever after.
Cupid's Attraction Spell
This spell is designed to attract an appropriate mate for you. It mimics the story of potions Aphrodite made to tip Eros's arrows. For best results perform on a Friday during a waxing to full moon.
Ingredients
1 unscented red votive candle
1 toothpick
1 cotton ball
1 drop of clove oil
4 drops of bergamot oil
2 drops of lavender oil
The ingredients will bolster the intent to attract your correct mate. Clove, bergamot, and lavender all associate with attraction, specifically love. Bergamot, a form of orange, is the color for attraction. The red votive is for love and also indicates the element of fire, which ignites attraction.
Hold and charge the candle. Visualize attracting your ideal mate. Think about all the attributes you would want in a mate to complete you and provide a balanced relationship. See your mate finding you easily and overcoming any obstacles. See that journey extend through time and space so your mate will be awakened to you, no matter where they are now.
Using the toothpick, carve a heart with a double-ended arrow shooting through the center, as shown in figure 3–2.

Figure 3-2 Heart with double-ended arrow
Combine the oils on the cotton ball and anoint the candle and symbol. For added potency, wear the oil as a perfume every day until your mate arrives.
Recite the following incantation while lighting your candle:
“Cupid, Cupid, come to me, Sling and set your arrow free, Travel long and travel far, Hit the mark right on the heart. Attract and find my mate to be, Quickly, steadily, come to me.” Burn your candle down completely to ensure full potency. Should time be a concern, choose a smaller sized candle or snuff the candle out to seal in its energies. Repeat the incantation each time you relight your candle.
Kokopelli
Kokopelli is a Native American symbol of fertility, prosperity, music, and dance. Often depicted as a trickster, Kokopelli is depicted holding a flute. His humpback is stuffed with songs and seeds.
Fact
Historians say that early Native American tribes worshiped Kokopelli and welcomed him into their villages to bring an abundance of crops. During these times, if a woman was unable to bear a child, she would pray to Kokopelli to come and impregnate her.
Some depictions of him show him to have a very large but removable phallus. Legend has it he would take off his penis and leave it in the river so he could make love to the young women who bathed in the water.
Fertility Love Spell
This spell invokes Kokopelli's association with fertility. This spell does take some time to come to full fruition, but it is very potent. This spell is best when performed on a full moon to ensure maximum potency.
Ingredients
1 whole acorn

Envision your life with the child you have created and the great joy and love that is surrounded by the birth. Visualize that as this acorn is planted and begins to sprout. This is in accordance with the fertilization of the egg.
Plant your acorn. Hold your hands above the place where the acorn is located. Charge and empower this area while reciting the incantation for Kokopelli.
“Kokopelli, fertilize me. Play and dance to sow my seed, Grow in ground, life abound Impregnate and make me/her round.”
Aengus
Aengus is a Celtic god of love, soul mates, marriage, and poetry. Call him to find your soul mate or true love. He is known by many as “the young god” and is often depicted with four birds flying over his head, symbolizing kisses.
One night, Aengus dreamed of a beautiful young maiden named Caer. He fell in love with her and vowed to find her. With his parents' help, Aengus managed to track down his true love. He arrived at a lake called the Dragon's Mouth to find 150 maidens chained together. The maidens transformed into swans on the first of November ever year, and Aengus had to identify his beloved in her avian form in order to win her. Aengus transformed himself into a swan and recognized Caer. They flew off together and sang a sweet melody for three days and three nights.
