Quality of Life Research

Historically, the focus in breast cancer research was mainly on the scientific level, looking at the causes, growth, and treatment of breast cancer. Over the last fifteen years quality of life concerns have been researched — especially how quality of life has an impact on one's decision-making process in breast cancer treatment. Survivorship is also an area that is being studied, but is a relatively young research area. It is estimated that there are 12 million cancer survivors in the country today. Because of early detection, breast cancer affects a younger population, which makes make up a good number of cancer survivors.

Research is needed in survivorship issues that address quality of life, looking at the long- and short-term side effects of breast cancer treatment. Many of the long-term side effects, such as risks associated with chemotherapy and radiation treatments like early onset of menopause, fatigue, lymphedema, change in body image, fear of recurrence, and cognitive changes, linger on long after breast cancer treatment is over. Not only are there physical changes, but there are also the emotional and psychological impacts on the individual with breast cancer and the relationship with her caregivers.

In His Own Words

My wife and so many like her are called “survivors” for a reason. Surviving draws on the inner strengths of the victim and her loved ones. The chemo, radiation, and drugs that follow aren't easy, but they are successful. Each generation of ladies with the disease has better treatment options and greater hope thanks to the courage and perseverance of those who have survived before.

— Ward, husband of Ellen, 12-year survivor

Research of quality of life issues as they relate to breast cancer is also important. This knowledge will lead to the development of intervention early on in breast cancer treatment that will help ease the emotional upheaval by providing the medical professionals insight into how to help survivors adjust to life after breast cancer treatment. Other areas such as work re-entry, and diet and lifestyle changes can also help to educate breast cancer survivors on what to expect with treatment and help women be proactive in their quality of life choices during and after treatment.
