Breast Cancer Vaccines Targeting HER -2 Breast Cancer

A vaccine, as well as new therapy, involving a vaccine to prevent the recurrence of positive cancer HER-2 began in spring 2009. The trial was given to 165 breast cancer patients with HER-2 tumors and lymph node involvement: 94 were vaccinated and 71 served as the control group and were not vaccinated. Researchers at Brooke Army Medical Center, San Antonio, Texas, are having some success in vaccinating breast cancer patients against its recurrence. The Neu Vax vaccine also known as (E75) is being used to test early-stage, HER-2 positive breast cancer. The study is small with a trial of 165 breast cancer patients, and after two-and-a-half years, the vaccinated group had both a lower risk of recurrence and was twice as likely to survive. The next trial, which may involve more than 700 patients, could offer the hope that women and researchers are striving for by providing better odds for women with HER-2 positive breast cancer. For now, it is still considered experimental and still too early to be considered conclusive, but is certainly a breakthrough that offers hope.
