Discover the Wisdom That Cancer Brings
Having breast cancer or any life-threatening disease leads to a journey of discovery of the unknown experiences that produce change, adaptation, and growth. As you incorporate these experiences into your being, you develop a wisdom that is uniquely yours. The journey of self-awareness, facing your fears, coping with difficulties, and learning to live in the face of adversity brings wisdom. Wisdom that comes from the cancer experience can be shared by writing a memoir, or journal, which has been proven to decrease anxiety, and provides a self-healing process to the breast cancer journey. If you found journaling to be helpful, you might volunteer to be a guest speaker at a breast cancer support group and do a journaling workshop geared toward breast cancer issues and concerns.
You may want to become a mentor for someone who is at the beginning stages of her breast cancer treatment. You might make yourself available to answer any questions she may have or at least refer her to someone who can help. You can volunteer at your local breast center by letting your health care professionals know that you are willing to help. Check with your breast cancer center. They may need volunteers to hold someone's hand during breast biopsies, or have ideas for many other ways you can help make the journey easier for others.
