Art Therapy

Art therapy is a complementary therapy that helps a person express herself creatively in a safe environment. Creating art has been found to improve a person's sense of physical, mental, and emotional well-being. The ability of a person to express herself in positive ways has an impact on her self-esteem, and therefore helps improve her overall health. Through creativity, art therapy can help you to express your pain and fear in a safe venue.

Much of the therapeutic benefits of art therapy come from the camaraderie with other breast cancer survivors who may be at different stages in their breast cancer treatment. Healing support can result from the communication that occurs during art therapy if done in a group setting. Art therapists work with many different media, including paper, paint, pencil, crayons, clay, metals, and beads. Not only is it a creative way to express oneself, but it also helps to resolve conflicts and problems by reducing stress and increasing self-awareness. Often art therapy can act as an inner expression of buried emotions through the process of creating. It is a safe way to express emotions that come with breast cancer treatment, and can also help build self-esteem. Art therapy can often be fun and it can be rewarding to see what has been created in the midst of your cancer treatments.
