Of all the parts of speech, prepositions are the hardest to define. In essence, they're the little words that show relationships between words, such as “the book on the table” as opposed to “the book under the couch” or “the book about Latin.” To paraphrase Potter Stewart, you might not be able to define prepositions, but you know them when you see them.
