The Letters S and Z

The letter s has two distinct sounds. The difference is similar to the difference present in the two English words rice (here there is a distinct s sound) and rise (here there is more of a z sound). When the letter s appears at the beginning of a word, it has the same sound S sound as in rice, house, snake, or sip.

The Letter Z</h2> <p>In Italian the letter <B>z</B> has two sounds: like the <B>ts</B> in cats, bits, and rots and like the <B>ds</B> in cards, bids, and rods. The difference in pronunciation is mostly regional, but most Italians seem to prefer the <B>ds</B> sound.</p> <p></p> <p><B>Table 2-21</B></p> <p><B>Pronunciation Exercise: Z</B> <emphasis role="Bolditalic">(ds)</emphasis></p> <table width="100%" frame="all"> <h2> <tgroup cols="2"> <colspec colname="col1" colnum="1"/> <colspec colname="col2" colnum="2"/> <tbody> <tr> <td><p><B>Italian</B></p></td> <td><p><B>English</B></p></td> </tr> <tr> <td><p><B>zaino</B></p></td> <td><p>backpack</p></td> </tr> <tr> <td><p><B>zucchero</B></p></td> <td><p>sugar</p></td> </tr> <tr> <td><p><B>zero</B></p></td> <td><p>zero</p></td> </tr> <tr> <td><p><B>zucchini</B></p></td> <td><p>zucchini</p></td> </tr> <tr> <td><p><B>zuppa</B></p></td> <td><p>soup</p></td> </tr> </tbody> </tgroup> </table> <p>However, there are some exceptions. The words in the following exercise are invariably pronounced using the <B>ts</B> sound of cats, hats, and mats.</p> <p></p> <p><B>Table 2-22</B></p> <p><B>Pronunciation Exercise: Z</B> <emphasis role="Bolditalic">(ts)</emphasis></p> <table width="100%" frame="all"> <tgroup cols="2"> <colspec colname="col1" colnum="1"/> <colspec colname="col2" colnum="2"/> <tbody> <tr> <td><p><B>Italian</B></p></td> <td><p><B>English</B></p></td> </tr> <tr> <td><p><B>pizza</B></p></td> <td><p>pizza</p></td> </tr> <tr> <td><p><B>mozzarella</B></p></td> <td><p>mozzarella</p></td> </tr> <tr> <td><p><B>pezzi</B></p></td> <td><p>pieces</p></td> </tr> <tr> <td><p><B>bellezza</B></p></td> <td><p>beauty</p></td> </tr> </tbody> </tgroup> </table> <p>Developing an ear for these two distinct sounds can be difficult.
