Ordinal Numbers
Ordinal numbers are used to put things into an order — for example, the third chapter or the first person. The ordinal number is commonly expressed with a Roman numeral when following the name of a pope (Benedict XVI or Benedetto Sedicesimo) or monarch (Vittorio Emanuele III or Vittorio Emanuele Terzo).

The first ten ordinal numbers each have a distinct form. After decimo, they are formed by dropping the final vowel of the cardinal number and adding -esimo. Numbers ending in -trè and -sei retain the final vowel of the cardinal number before adding -esimo.
undici — undicesimo
ventitrè — ventitreesimo
trentasei — trentaseiesimo
There's no widely accepted term for the twenty-first century that follows the pattern in Table 5-6. We can say il secolo ventunesimo, which is perhaps the most popular term for the new millennium (il nuovo millennio).
Ordinal numbers, like adjectives, agree in number and in gender with the nouns they modify. Ordinal numbers normally precede the noun.
