Né … né
Né … né is a conjunction in Italian that corresponds to the correlative conjunctions “neither … nor” and “either … or” in English. Né … né means “neither … nor” when placed before the verb.
Né Elena né Caterina vogliono assistere alla conferenza. |
Neither Elena nor Caterina want to attend the conference. |
Né Marco né Davide vengono alla festa. |
Neither Marco nor David is coming to the party. |
When using né … né with the subject of a sentence (Né Marco né Davide vengono alla festa, for example), Italian uses a plural form of the verb, whereas English uses a singular form of the verb.
“Non + verb + né … né” also means “neither … nor” or “either … or:”
Non mangia né carne né pesce. |
He eats neither meat nor fish. OR He doesn't eat either meat or fish. |
Non so né sciare né nuotare. |
I know neither how to ski nor how to swim. |
