Né … né

Né … né is a conjunction in Italian that corresponds to the correlative conjunctions “neither … nor” and “either … or” in English. Né … né means “neither … nor” when placed before the verb.

Né Elena né Caterina vogliono assistere alla conferenza.

Neither Elena nor Caterina want to attend the conference.

Né Marco né Davide vengono alla festa.

Neither Marco nor David is coming to the party.

When using né … né with the subject of a sentence (Né Marco né Davide vengono alla festa, for example), Italian uses a plural form of the verb, whereas English uses a singular form of the verb.

Non + verb + né … né” also means “neither … nor” or “either … or:”

Non mangia né carne né pesce.

He eats neither meat nor fish. OR He doesn't eat either meat or fish.

Non so né sciare né nuotare.

I know neither how to ski nor how to swim.
