Constant Personal Improvement
The substance of any profession is the desire of its employees to improve themselves and the profession. If law enforcement agents want to view their career as a vocation, then it will surely be just that. If, however, they approach their job as a calling and spend their time and energy trying to elevate the standards and practices of the profession from the beginning of their career to the end, it will stand shoulder-to-shoulder with other professions.
Alert
It is estimated that there are approximately 1 million full-time law enforcement officials in the United States serving at the various levels of government. This number reflects only the traditional local and state police officers, sheriff's deputies, and primary federal law enforcement agents within the U.S. Department of Justice.
It is probably a good thing that sometimes everyone in law enforcement gets accused of thinking they are above the law when one officer crosses the line. It is probably good that some of the public assumes that all law enforcement officers share a disdain for the people they serve. When the good guys are painted with the same broad brush as the bad guys it is disheartening, but can also serve as a wakeup call for law enforcement to take actions to counter that image.
