As previously discussed, there is a three-tier system within law enforcement that includes local, state, and federal divisions. There is also an additional category of county government, often mistakenly considered to be part of local government or some kind of subdivision of the state. County government is its own level of government, as is county law enforcement. In most cases, the elected sheriff is the only direct voice that the people have in law enforcement.
