In 1948, George de Mestrall, a Swiss engineer, came up with an idea for a new fastener. He came home from hiking one day and discovered some burrs clinging to his cloth jacket. On further inspection, he noticed that the burrs contained many thin strands that could easily hook onto cloth or fur. He decided to implement this idea using two strips of nylon fabric. One side contains thousands of small hooks, and the other side contains small loops. He named this product Velcro.
