Natural Disasters

When you're talking to insurance agents you need to find out what natural disasters are included or excluded in the policy. Depending on where you live, you may want to be sure you have coverage for such things as snow load on roofs, windstorms, mudslides, earthquakes, floods, and hurricanes. If they're not included, ask if they can be added to the policy as a rider and what it would cost, or if a separate policy has to be written.

When insurers experience heavy claims for weather-related damage, they try to entirely exclude coverage for future occurrences from new or renewed policies, or include it only if you pay a higher premium, get a rider, or have a high deductible.
