How to Move an Injured Dog
As you probably learned at some point in your life, it can be dangerous to move a person with an injury. The same is true for dogs. If your Lab is injured and must be moved out of harm's way or transported to a veterinary hospital, you can take steps to minimize potential injuries from moving him.
If you must pick your dog up, keep the injured side away from your body. Lift him by placing one arm around his chest or between his front legs. Support his rear with your other arm. If a hind leg is injured, place your arm between the hind legs. Don't forget to bend your knees and lift with your legs; it's much easier on your back.
Another way to move the dog is to lay him on a blanket or a large, flat, sturdy piece of wood. This can then be used as a stretcher, but it will require two to four people to carry the dog (assuming it's a full-grown Lab). In the car, cushion the dog with pillows, towels, or rolled blankets. Keep him warm with a blanket or towel to help ward off shock.
