Having Your Puppy Shipped

If your puppy must be shipped by air, confirm with the breeder that he's sending the puppy on a morning flight (a cooler time of day) and on as direct a flight as possible — preferably one that's nonstop. Be aware that some airlines won't ship dogs during the heat of the summer. Also, there's no need for the puppy to be tranquilized since at altitude, drugs can do more harm than good.

The ideal situation would be for you or the breeder to find someone who can take the puppy in the cabin in a carrier that fits beneath the seat and deliver him to you at the airport. If that's not possible, call ahead to the airport to find out exactly where you can pick the dog up. Be there on time so he doesn't have to wait in a noisy, unfamiliar place.

When you pick up your Lab at the airport, make sure to put on his collar, tags, and leash right away and hustle him outside so he can relieve himself.
