Basic Commands

Here are the five magic words your Lab should know: sit, down, come, stay, and heel. You don't have to wait until puppy kindergarten to start teaching them, either. Your eight-week-old Lab pup is ready, willing, and able to learn — so start practicing these commands at home as soon as you get your puppy, and he'll be the star of the Pre-K class.

Before you get started, make note of a few simple rules:

  • Train when you're in a good mood.

  • Give commands in a firm tone of voice; praise in a happy tone of voice.

  • Stop training if you get frustrated.

  • Train in a quiet place with no distractions.

  • Train before meals so your Lab will be interested in the treats you're offering.

  • Always end training sessions with something your Lab has done successfully.

  • Be sure everyone practices giving the commands to the dog so that he responds to all family members. This is also a good way to make sure he really understands a command.
