Understanding Muscular Strength

There are two kinds of muscular strength. The first is dynamic strength, or the force generated by a muscle group as a body part is moved. Squats, leg presses, pushups, and bench presses are all considered dynamic strength exercises since movement is occurring.

The second type of muscular strength is static strength, which is built from the force generated against an immovable object. This is also sometimes referred to as isometric strength. Force is generated so the muscle is working, but no actual movement occurs. An example would be pushing against a car. It will take a certain amount of static strength to get the car moving. Once you get the wheels moving, you may start to move your legs. However, your upper body will remain still though it continues to generate force.

Application of Muscular Strength to Krav Maga

Clearly, muscular strength comes into play when you consider any strike, that is, punches and kicks. In Krav Maga you are taught to make every attack count. There is an emphasis placed upon making every attack a strong one. A punch can either irritate or injure depending on the amount of strength you put behind it.

Development of Muscular Strength

In general, exercises with so much resistance that you are unable to exceed a minimum of twelve repetitions are the kinds of exercises that build muscular strength. Power lifters, at one extreme, often work with weights that are heavy enough to limit their sets to four or less reps, and they often perform six to ten sets. This type of training effectively develops the greatest potential for maximum strength.
