Combinations

Once you feel comfortable with the basic punches you can begin to work on combinations of punches. A combination is a series of punches. What distinguishes a combination is as you recoil one punch the next punch is beginning to develop. Think of it as punches passing each other in front of you rather than sending one punch, stopping, and then throwing another punch.

SAFETY

Keep in mind that, when working to a heavy bag, you do not have a correct target for an Uppercut. It is not recommended to practice Uppercuts to the bag. If you put an Uppercut into a combination while working on the heavy bag, have the back of your hand slide up along the bag to simulate the punch.

The most basic combination is a left-right punch combo. As you send the left punch, the right hand is ready to follow. When the left hand comes back, the right hand is delivered. The emphasis should be placed on driving with the legs and hip in order to generate power behind both punches. Once you are comfortable with that, try adding a left Hook off the right Cross. Again, emphasize shifting your weight from your left to your right as you send the left Hook by driving with the legs and hips.

The last addition is the right Uppercut. From the left Hook, drop down slightly and drive your weight forward and up into your right Uppercut. Recoil your hand back to your face and move your feet as your would in a fight.
