There is no question that the Koran allows a man to take more than one wife. Polygamy in Islam has become a subject for criticism by non-Muslims who consider it immoral and a disgrace. Islam defends itself, saying it is a logical religion that wouldn't have permitted polygamy if it weren't for solid reasons. It is true that a man can marry up to four women, but strict conditions apply. Allowing polygamy is not meant to dishonor women. By contrast, it is a social necessity with a primary goal of protecting women.
