Welcome to The Everything® KIDS' Word Search Puzzle and Activity Book! The word search — which is essentially a game of hide-and-seek with letters — is a great puzzle. Word searches can be simple to do, but they are more satisfying if there is a twist or two added. In this book, you'll find some basic searches, but a lot of the puzzles also have an added element of fun!
A basic word search has a list of words and a letter grid. Your job is to locate all the listed words, which are hidden in the grid. Easy, right? Not always! Look at the sample puzzle. It shows that the words can be hiding in several different directions. Words can overlap each other, too.
Every once in a while, the words will be placed in the grid in a different pattern. You might have to look for words that are spelled in a circle or curve through the puzzle like a snake. We'll certainly let you know about these special puzzles in their directions!
Once you have located a word in the grid, you'll want to mark it in some way. Some people use a pencil or pen to draw a big loop around the whole word. Personally, we like to use highlighting markers and draw a line of bright pink, yellow, orange, or blue right through the word. This makes the answers pop right off the page!
You might be wondering if there is a best way to approach a word search. We've found that some people move systematically through the puzzle, searching across or up and down each line. Other people look for the uncommon letters first — like J or Q — that might not appear too often in the grid. You can try these methods out, or look for one that suits you better.
We have tried to add a little extra fun into these puzzles. You might need to unscramble letters, break a code, or solve picture clues to get the word list for that puzzle. For others, there's a hidden picture or joke in the grid when you're done. Some of the puzzles do not come with a word list, and in others words are hiding more than once. We've tried to mix it up so that each word search puzzle will be fresh and exciting.
