Barnyard Oddities

All day, count up the unusual barnyard critters you see, like emus, ostriches, and such. These unusual farms can be in any farming area. Some farmers really do raise these for meat, oil, and hide, instead of the pigs and cows that we're used to. Raising emus in North America started in Texas in 1984, and Canada in 1988 — that's not very long ago!

WORDS to KNOW

emu: A flightless bird, related to (but smaller than) the ostrich. Like ostriches, emus are originally from Australia.
