Red Light, Green Light

This classic game is easy to play and you don't have to be fast to win. You do, however, need to be able to start and stop quickly — and hold still when you stop! The game works best with at least four people.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED:

  • A driveway and a piece of chalk, or a large activity room like the school gym.

  • BEFORE YOU START:

    • Draw a start and a finish line with the chalk, or decide which lines on the gym floor you will use. They should be far enough apart for a good race, but not so far that you can't hear the Caller.

    • Choose a “Caller.” This player stands on the finish line with his back to the racers.

    • All the other players line up on the starting line.

    TO PLAY:

    • When the Caller yells, “Green Light,” everyone moves forward.

    • When the Caller yells, “Red Light,” everyone must stop and stand completely still. The Caller whips around and tries to catch racers who are moving. If he catches anyone, that person goes back to the start line.

    • The game continues until someone reaches the finish line and tags the Caller. That racer becomes the Caller for the next game!

EXTRA FUN: Break the RLGL code to see which kid — 1, 2, or 3 — becomes the next caller!
