Fun Isn't Free

Money truly does make the world go around. In order to buy anything or have anyone do any kind of service or work, you have to pay for it. Nobody works for free, so anything a person creates, fixes, or does costs money. It would be great if you could go to the store and pick out a DVD for free, but the actors who are in the movie have to be paid, the people who filmed the movie need to be paid, and the people who actually produced the disc and case also have to be paid for their time and the cost of the materials. Every time you buy something, you are helping to pay the salaries of the people who helped create the thing or service you are buying.

You may not realize it, but almost everything you use or do every day costs money. Let's look at a typical day for you.

  • Morning. You wake up in your bed in your pajamas. You run water to brush your teeth. You pour cereal in a bowl. You put on clothes and shoes. Every part of this costs money — the bed, water, toothpaste, cereal, bowl, clothes, and shoes.

  • School. You ride the bus to school. You sit at your desk and use a pencil to do a worksheet. The teacher talks to the class. You have lunch in the cafeteria and then go to art class where you paint a picture. You ride the bus home. Again, it all costs money — the bus and the school itself cost money to build. Your teacher gets paid a salary. Your lunch had to be paid for, and someone had to buy the paint, the pencil, and the worksheet.

  • Afternoon. You come home and watch television, have a snack, and then play a game with your brother. You put on your rollerblades and skate outside. Your parents make dinner and you sit at the table and eat together. You guessed it — everything from the television and the snack to the game and your rollerblades costs money. Even the sidewalks you skated on cost money! The food you ate and the table you ate at all had to be purchased somewhere!

  • Evening. It gets dark, so your parents turn on the lights. You take a bath and then do a puzzle. Your mom shows you a game on the computer. Your parents pay for the electricity, the puzzle, the Internet access, and the computer. All of it costs money.

  • It seems like the world is made of money if you think about it closely, doesn't it? There are actually a couple of different ways that the costs of things are paid for.

    Public Costs

There are many things in your life that you or your parents don't directly pay for, but you still contribute to them whether you realize it or not. If you go to a public school, your parents don't have to pay in order for you to go there. Anyone who lives in your neighborhood can go to the school without having to pay. However, schools are expensive — the buildings, supplies, furniture, heat, lights, water, and teachers' salaries are all big costs.

Both are nicknames for a silver dollar!

Things like schools are paid for by the government. It's not a freebie for everyone, though! People pay taxes and the government uses some of that money to run schools. Tax money is also used to build sidewalks, run hospitals, pay firefighters, and mow the grass in the park.

What's interesting is that everyone must contribute to these costs, but even though your parents have to pay a school tax, they can't make decisions about what happens at the school. In our system of government, the people we elect to run our government are the ones who decide how to use the money we pay in taxes. This is one reason why it is important to vote — so that you can have a say in who is going to spend your money!

<emphasis role="Bolditalic">BENEFITS</emphasis>: A benefit is something an employee receives as part of his or her job that has a money value. Health insurance is one common benefit, but your dad's employer might also pay for his cell phone if he uses it for work.

Private Costs

Many things that cost money are paid for by individuals. Your parents pay for food, furniture, and your ticket to the movies (unless you pay for that yourself!). Your family may also have some things that are paid for directly by one of your parents' employers. Many companies pay for their employees' health insurance, and they might also provide a car or other items for the employee to use.

The places where you buy things also pay costs themselves. When you go to a restaurant, the owner of the restaurant has to buy all the food, plates, silverware, and furniture, and she must also pay the waiters, cooks, and busboys who work there. The owner also has to pay rent, electricity, and water bills to keep the actual restaurant building open. The store you buy a pack of gum at must buy the gum from the company that makes it and pay the person who delivers it to the store, as well as pay all the people who work in the store.
