Decoding Coins

There are several things that are required by law to be on all U.S. coins:

  • “LIBERTY”

  • An image of Liberty, usually a female form

  • “In God We Trust”

  • The date

  • The denomination

  • “United States of America”

  • “E Pluribus Unum” (Latin for “out of many, one,” meaning many states come together to make our one country)

  • An eagle on coins larger than a dime

  • Exceptions are made, though, such as with the state quarter designs.
